The Steffi Nossen School of Dance is celebrating its 80th anniversary with a Gala concert on Saturday, April 1, 2017. The concert will honor the legacy and future of the School and all those who continue to dance through its doors. The conert will take place at the SUNY Purchase Performing Arts Center.
The Gala Concert will feature a performance by choreographer/dancer Mariah Steele, a 2002 graduate of the Steffi Nossen School of Dance. Also on the program will be the school’s top pre-professional ensembles presenting newly choreographed work. A pre-concert Cocktail Reception and Silent Auction will raise funds for the school’s outreach, special needs, and financial aid programs. The Saturday Gala curtain is at 7:30 PM.

Mariah Steele grew up in Scarsdale and graduated from Scarsdale HS and the Steffi Nossen School of Dance in 2002, where she served as President of the Steffi Nossen Dance Company. A graduate of Princeton University, where she studied dance under the direction of Ze’eva Cohen, she is the artistic director of Quicksilver Dance, a modern/contemporary dance company with roots in New York City,which was based in Cambridge, MA from 2010–2015 and now is in Oakland, CA. Using anthropological inquiry and artistic exploration, the company’s dances delve into contemporary and timeless issues to inspire reflection and imagination and to spark new perspectives and cross-cultural dialogue. In April 2013, Mariah was named a "Rising Talent" by the Boston Globe Magazine. “Mariah Steele performs..with strong grounded authority..”. Gus Solomons has said of her work, “Steele gives convincing dramatic intention to assertive movement bursts that alternate with contemplative pauses.” “This is dance for dancers: great variety of mood and movement and performers who bubble with enthusiasm for the work.... I dare you to find a company that dances with more heart.” was written about the company’s performance at the Montreal Fringe Festival.
Also presented will be premieres of new work by New York City-based emerging choreographers Kathleen Kelley who has created a new work on the Dance Theater Group and Samuel Asher Kunzman, and Indah Walsh who created new works for the Steffi Nossen Dance Company. These works have been commissioned by the Foundation.They will join Steffi Nossen School of Dance faculty choreographer/teachers Annie Doss and Jessica DiMauro, concert Producer, who are creating new work on the school’s Master Classes.
